Advocate for homeowners to get a greater cut of the power they are generating through their solar panels that is going back to El Paso Electric. Homeowners should be offered a fair and competitive rate closer to the market value.
City Owned Community Solar
Move to create publicly owned community solar plants that do not depend on the for-profit El Paso Electric Company. These community solar plants can vary in size, include their own back-up batteries, start at the localized level, and provide power for city owned installations, eventually expanding to a wider private sector for the benefit of the community.
Homeowner Programs
Create city-backed, not-for-profit, loan programs that would facilitate any individual from installing solar panels and back-up batteries, where the cost of principle, interest, maintenance, and insurance would be competitively lower than the increasing monthly electric bills we’ve been getting. Any money collected by the city would be put back into these solar power initiatives for the benefit of the community.
Long Term Goal
Move away from the dependence on private electric, influence the surrounding areas to do the same, drive down the demand for El Paso Electric down enough to be able to have more leverage over the private company and eventually regain our control over the utility company.
